Christmas Countdown: Day 14: Every Girl's Guide Teaser + HUGE PRIZE PACK GIVEAWAY!

And so we’ve finally come to the end of Christmas Countdown. Before anything else, Precious and I would like to thank every single one of the authors who participated in our first ever blog event! Special thanks to all the people who helped us with Christmas Countdown – Bernadette Cruz, Sarah Smith, Simon & Schuster, Adele Griffin, Christy Raedake, Holly Cupala, Amy Holder, Inara Scott, Brenda Pandos, Julie Chibbaro, Lauren Oliver, Melissa dela Cruz, Summit Media, Marla Miniano, Lisa Desrochers and Kimberly Derting!

For this last day, we'd like to feature a local author's work as part of our objective for this event. Believe it or not, the Philippines also has its fair share of talented writers, and one of them is Marla Miniano. You can read her interview over at Fragments of Life!

Marla is the author of the Every Girl's Guide Trilogy. You might want to take some time to read her works, trust me, you won't regret it!

Every Girl’s Guide to Heartache is the first book in the “Every Girl’s Guide” series. This first offering features the story of Anna, who has just been dumped by Jaime, the guy she thought was the love of her life. While she is distraught, angry, and seeking for revenge, she also wants to understand how this perfect guy ended up not being The One after all. Entering the picture to complicate matters is Miguel, who is literally The Boy a Few Houses Down. Will Anna survive this heartache and be happy again, and does her happiness lie with Miguel? Or is her heart just playing tricks on her?

Every Girls's Guide to Boys is the second book in the Every Girl's Guide trilogy, and tells the story of Chrissy, who thinks her life is problem free (she even sets up an online advice column to make use of all her good girl talent) till her bestfriend, the boy she's been in live with since she was maybe five, comes back from he U.S. Now this would be a good thing if she wasn't already in an unofficial, sort-of relationship with her long-time crush, Nathan. Is it finally time for Chrissy to trash her good girl image and follow her gut? Or is she making the biggest mistake of her life?

Every Girl's Guide to Flings is the book that completes the trilogy, and feature Rickie. In her high heels, short skirts, and purple eyeliner, Rickie is known as the wayward friend of good girls Anna and Chrissy. Her string of meaningless flings, happening parties, and more boys lining up to ask her out make her the envy of every teenage girl- till she sets her sights on a very bad idea: Anna's ex. Is Rickie headed for a disaster? Or will she finally fall in love and get her very own happy ending?
If you ask me, all three books are right up my alley when it comes to books that I read. So you guys should check them out as well! Marla also has a new book out called Table for Two.

A corner table at a cozy coffee shop witnesses many things:

A long-time couple about to break up after college graduation. A young teacher accepting a dare from her teenage brother to quit dating for two months. A wedding photographer trying to convince his best friend not to get married. A boy meeting up with the girl he never quite got over. And a girl sitting alone, reading romance novels, wondering if today is the day she will stop being lonely.

Do their lives intersect and intertwine -- spiraling them through an obstacle course of love and loss and hope and heartbreak? And can they each find the happy ending they so desperately want?

Christmas Countdown: Day 12: Brenda Pandos Interview + Giveaway

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! It's almost two hours into Christmas here on my side of the world, and we're all busy partying and opening gifts! I just got a beautiful silver bookmark from my sister with my name engraved on it. I'm so touched!

Today is the last day we're featuring authors and their books for our Countdown. To all the authors who participated, we love you all! You don't know how much you've all helped us! This event wouldn't be possible without you! Continue to write awesome books! :)

Please welcome Brenda Pandos on our blog!

Brenda is the author of the debut novel, The Emerald Talisman which was released March 23, 2010.

The sequel, The Sapphire Talisman, has been released December 15th!

-----

What or who inspired you to write The Emerald Talisman? Why?

Lemons in my life inspired The Emerald Talisman. My youngest was diagnosed with an austic disorder and life changed drastically. I needed something of my own, so I wrote. My readers inspired The Sapphire Talisman and their enthusiasm made me want to finish as quickly as possible.

What lessons will readers pick up from your books? (for book 1 and book 2)

There's great value in being kind, telling the truth, and choosing to do the right thing.

Why do you write for teens?

I like writing about that time of life. It's passionate, exciting and young/first love is always a great story to tell.

How do you prepare for Christmas?

I start by saving money for gifts early. Then after Thanksgiving, we decorate the house with lights, inside with decorations and get a Christmas tree. I really enjoy the music of the holiday too. We tell our kids the Christmas story and do the advent with candles to count down Jesus' birthday. On Christmas Eve, we go to church then come home and the adults open gifts. Christmas morning is all about the kids. After, we have a big meal as a family. I love Christmas.

As an author/writer, are you doing something special this Christmas?

Birthing a book December 15th is something I've never done around Christmas before. I'm glad because I hope my book will available in time to be under the tree for happy readers!

Does your family have a Christmas tradition?

Our parents get us (my 3 siblings and I) an ornament that represents something we've done the past year. It's always fun to see what clever things my mom finds. Hanging past ornaments helps me reminisce the years past. The girls all get pajamas and wear them Christmas eve night and we'll all watch a movie or play games together.

Do you take advantage of the Christmas vacation and write?

Being a stay-at-home mom doesn't give me any vacations. I do get a sitter on a regular basis and my husband will be home some of the time, so I'm sure I'll have a little extra time to write.

As a writer, do you think it would be better to gift books for Christmas? why? Have you ever done this before?

I think books make great gifts. If I know someone really wants a particular book or has a thing for a certain genre, I'd pick them up a copy for sure. I've also received them in the past and have been mighty grateful.

If you were to gift one book to any person, what book would it be?

I'd gift Mockingjay to my babysitter because she devoured the first two books and would love to read the third.

-----

Wonderful interview, don't you think? I'd give the Hunger Games trilogy to everyone I knew who loves to read. It's an awesome series that everyone should read! Thanks Brenda for gracing our blog with your presence this Christmas eve!

GIVEAWAY TIME!!!

Consider this as a treat for Christmas eve. Brenda is giving away a copy of THE SAPPHIRE TALISMAN. Yes, the sequel! Don't miss this chance to win an awesome book!

Christmas Countdown: Day 10: Misguided Angel Review + Revelations Giveaway!

When I said Melissa de la Cruz had a few more tricks up her sleeve, I was right.

Though Misguided Angel has less intensity in terms of action, the development in the plot made up for it, as a lot is happening and unfolding as the story moves. It takes a while for the pace to pick up though. Unlike the Van Alen Legacy, Misguided Angel had a more relaxed tone overall, more tamed than the previous book. It did not lack in action and thrill, but there were few compared to the other books.

Title: Misguided Angel by Melissa de la Cruz
Pages: 256
Release Date: October 26, 2010
Published by: Hyperion Book CH
Source: From Melissa for review (thank you!)
Buy: Amazon | Book Depository

Summary:
After inheriting the dark Van Alen Legacy, Schuyler fled to Florence--with her forbidden love, Jack. Now the two of them must embark on the mission Schuyler was destined to complete: to find and protect the seven gates that guard earth from Lucifer, lord of the Silverbloods. As the Blue Blood enclave weakens yet further, fate leads Schuyler closer to a terrifying crossroads--and a choice that will determine the destiny of all vampires.
Misguided Angel picks up where The Van Alen Legacy left off. Schuyler is on the run, but this time with her beloved, Jack, the Angel Abaddon. Schuyler is embarking on an adventure of her own as she fights to fulfill a legacy that was left to her, finding the gates and their keepers to prevent the Morningstar, Lucifer, from ressurrecting.

Schuyler and Jack, however short-lived it may be, had time to finally be free and show their love for each other as much as they want to. The moments between them are getting more intense, a lot sweeter than the last, and I have to admit that I miss it during the latter part of the book where they barely appeared.

A lot of surprises are in store for the Blue Bloods fans as there are interesting developments that happened in this book. One of which, is between the Angel Azazel, the newly elected Regent, Mimi Force and Schuyler's friend, and former familiar, Oliver.

Mimi Force and Oliver Perry being civil? No, friendly? It felt like I was in an alternate universe, but somehow it made sense. Both of them are hurting, trying to get over the love that they have lost. No one would understand what each other was going through better than them. They found unlikely allies in each other. Yet another interesting thing I didn't see coming in this story. In light of their closeness, I feel like Oliver will, once again, play a major part in the next book. Is it possible for Mimi Force to have another love?

Readers get a deeper glimpse into the politics surrounding the rest of the Blue Bloods. Mimi's role as a Regent has left the Coven in shambles, and the Angel of Death has to face some struggles of her own. Elders do not trust one of the Angels that has led them to their fall, urged them to revolt against the Almighty. We see another side of Mimi as a young leader of a Coven amidst the ongoing war with the Silver Bloods.

Only in this book did I fully realize that the world of the Blue Bloods is vast, big. For the first time since the first book, Misguided Angel has focused not on Jack and Schuyler, but instead introduced other characters who play major parts in the story's entirety as well. It was a bit confusing to decipher at first, but Melissa was gradually able to tie all of these separate stories together neatly.

Readers who have lingering questions left after reading the Van Alen Legacy will find themselves asking more questions in this book. That's what I felt while I was reading through Misguided Angel. As some questions are answered, a few new ones appeared. What vital role will Deming Chen play? What will happen to Jack? How will Oliver's newfound closeness with Mimi affect the lives entangled with theirs? And most importantly, will Schuyler be able to succeed in fulfilling her legacy? To my frustration and dismay, we readers still have to wait a while to find the answers to all these questions.

Overall, Misguided Angel is an enjoyable read. I felt like it was a prequel to something big, a bit of an introduction into something massive that will surprise us! Melissa might be holding out the best parts for an explosive end! If the purpose of this book is to build enough interest for a stunning conclusion of the Blue Bloods series, then it has done its job very well!

Christmas Countdown: Day 8: Kimberly Derting Interview + Giveaway!

It's Day 8 of our countdown, and Christmas is just around the corner~ and as we near the end of our blog event, we are giving away MORE BOOKS!

We're making things a bit interesting today. Yesterday, Precious officially started receiving comments for a PRIZE PACK! Yes, we have a prize pack where you can win a couple of books!

Today, we have the amazing Kimberly Derting on our blog. I absolutely adored Kim and her writing and I think THE BODY FINDER is one of the best paranormal books of 2010. You can read my review below to find out just how amazing Kim and her book is. :)

Kim was born and raised in Seattle. Her debut novel, The Body Finder was published March 16th 2010 by HarperTeen.

Desires of the Dead, the second book in The Body Finder series, is scheduled to be released on February 15, 2011!

----

If you were asked to describe The Body Finder to someone who has no idea what it’s about, how will you do it?

It’s about a girl who can find those who have been murdered—and those who’ve murdered them—by the sensory “echoes” that attach to each victim and also to the one responsible for their murder. Oh, and there’s a really sweet romance!

This is precisely why I’m not asked to write the jacket copy. :)

Do you have any quirks or weird habit while writing the book?

I drink inordinate amounts of tea and keep a huge bag of Skittles in my top drawer, but other than that, it’s pretty straightforward. I just need some sweatpants, a comfy chair, and a laptop. (Showers are optional!)

Are any of the characters based on other people/people you know? Who and what are your inspirations for writing them?

For several of the tertiary characters in The Body Finder, I decided to use my friend’s and family’s first and last names (never together though). At my launch party for The Body Finder, many wore their The Body Finder shirts with their names or character descriptions on the back. For example, one of them had the word “Floater” on the back of her shirt. I’ll let you try and figure that one out on your own! :)

What's the hardest part of The Body Finder to write?

For me, it’s probably all of the waiting required. I’m impatient, and it seems like I’m always waiting for something! While that may not necessary be a specific challenge, it’s still one of the hardest parts, no matter what stage of the writing process I’m in.

Since it’s just around the corner, what do you think is the best part of Christmas? The worst?

I love just about everything about the Christmas season: the food, the lights, the music, the shopping! Oh, and did I mention the food???

The worst part, for me, is how busy we are that time of year. I’d like it to slow down just a little so I could spend some more time enjoying it, since it all feels like it’s over in a flash.

How do you celebrate for Christmas?

Christmas Day is sacred in our house. We do nothing. Absolutely nothing! Seriously, we stay home all day in our PJs, watching movies and eating junk food. It’s the best day of the year because we’re all together!

Would you rather give gifts or receive them?

Give them, definitely! Shopping is part of what I love about Christmas. (Although, I’m not opposed to finding something sparkly under the tree!)

What's the one gift you'd like to receive this Christmas?

This is going to sound ridiculous, but I really want a new pair of slippers. What does that say about how much time I spend in the house??? It’s kind of sad, really… ;)

Do you have a tradition you celebrate which you think is special or unique in your family or place?

It may not be very unique, but we all try to eat dinner together every night. That may sound boring and simple, but with a 9-year-old and 17-year-old, and trying to balance all of our crazy schedules, it’s a lot harder than you’d think.

Christmas Countdown: Day 6: Inara Scott Interview + Giveaway!

We're almost halfway through our Christmas Countdown event, and everything's in full-swing! If you still don't know, you can win a SIGNED copy of The Other Side of Dark, Picture of the Dead + Shirt, Prophecy of Days, Tell Me A Secret and The Lipstick Laws + SWAG! Just click on the button on the right side of this page!

Today we have the wonderful Inara Scott over at our blog! Join us on our sixth day of the countdown and win a SIGNED copy of Inara's debut novel, The Candidates!

Inara grew up in Buffalo New York and is now living in Pacific NW. Her debut novel, The Candidates (Delcroix Academy, #1) has been released August 24th 2010 by Hyperion CH.

-------

What or who inspired you to write The Candidates? Why?

I wanted to write a book that had all of my favorite things – romance, fantasy, and a really tough, smart heroine. I also wanted to write a story that would center around difficult choices – in fact, I originally titled the book “Taking Sides.” In most of the fantasy I’d read, there was a very clear good guy and bad guy, and the fantasy elements – magical powers, curses, etc -- aligned on the side of either black or white. I wanted to write a story in which the good and bad were mixed together, with no clear way to tell them apart – but then force the heroine to make a choice between them anyway. Kinda like life.

What lessons will readers pick up from your book?

I don't really expect to teach any lessons. Actually, I hope readers walk away from the book with questions -- did Dancia make the right choice? What are the possible consequences of her choice? And then I would love for them to apply their thinking about those tough choices to some of the bigger problems in the world today.

Why do you write for teens?

Young adult fiction allows almost limitless possibilities for authors; long or short, happy or sad, teens are incredibly daring and willing to read almost anything. The only requirements are that you tell a good story and make it real. This fits perfect with the type of writing I want to do.

How do you prepare for Christmas?

Oh, I love Christmas! We pull the boxes (we've got a lot of them) and the fake tree (yep - we've got a fake one) out of the attic just after Thanksgiving. We always decorate the house to the sound of John Denver and the Muppets. It's the best Christmas album EVER. I start shopping on Black Friday. I'm one of those, "get up at 4AM for the good deals" sort of people. I love buying presents.

As an author/writer, are you doing something special this Christmas?

Nothing too special, though for the first time this year I'm writing full time, instead of juggling my writing and my day job. This means I can actually write through all craziness, instead of putting away the Work In Progress on December 1st and vowing to get back to it after the New Year.

Does your family have a Christmas tradition?

Oh, too many to describe! One special tradition in Portland is that people decorate their boats with Christmas lights and do nightly parades on the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. Here's a link -- it's very cool: http://www.christmasships.org/ Watching the Christmas ships is one of my favorite traditions.

Do you take advantage of the Christmas vacation and write?

I sure will this year! A lot of years I've been panicking the last few days before Christmas because I haven't gotten enough done. This year I'm going to be much more laid back. I'm really looking forward to it.

As a writer, do you think it would be better to gift books for Christmas? why? Have you ever done this before?

I love giving books for Christmas, though my family members read so much it can be hard to find something they haven't already read! I often get interesting "coffee-table" books for Christmas gifts, like books of photography, or architecture. I love searching for treasures at used bookstores. Used books make great gifts, too!

If you were to gift one book to any person, what book would it be?

My son was looking at a very cool book about Legos last night at a bookstore -- it was expensive, but I'd love to get it for him!

Christmas Countdown: Day 4: Interview w/ Holly Cupala + Giveaway

So today is the 4th day of our Christmas Countdown! You guys must know that we're giving away copies of The Other Side of Dark by Sarah Smith, Adele Griffin's Picture of the Dead and Christy Raedake's Prophecy of Days, right? No? THEN HEAD OVER TO THIS POST AND HELP US CELEBRATE!

We have the awesome Holly Cupala as a guest in our blog, where she talks about her book, Tell Me A Secret and sharing something about what she's doing for Christmas. Read on!

About the author:

Holly Cupala wrote teen romance novels before she ever actually experienced teen romance. These days, her writing is less about tragedy and more about hope. TELL ME A SECRET is her first novel.

Ten percent of the author's proceeds go toward World Vision's Hope for Sexually Exploited Girls.

-----

What or who inspired you to write TMAS? Why?

The year I started TELL ME A SECRET was a very difficult one, with two significant losses. I almost quit writing because of it. Then I went to a conference a few months later, and a friend asked if I was thinking of writing about it. All of a sudden, the entire idea came to me, just landed in my lap, and I started writing it down as fast as I could. Miranda’s story isn’t my story, though my experiences inspired a lot of the emotions. The mystery and the relationships and the secrets…those all grew organically. Some of the secrets I didn’t even know until I typed them!

What do you hope readers will take away from your book?

I’ll let you in on a secret: most of the time, writers don’t even know this (often called the theme) until the book is finished, or very nearly finished. As I was writing, I would hit on some new layer and think, this is the theme…then later: no wait, this is the theme! I didn’t realize until reaching the end that the central messages are, you can’t find yourself in other people, and the past does not have to define the future. But then what I hope the most is that readers will take away what is most important to them.

Why do you write for teens?

Before I started writing Tell Me a Secret, I wrote all kinds of stories for different ages—none of them teens. When the idea came to me, I was terrified, both because I knew it would be a very intense story to write, and I didn’t know if teens would be interested. I’ve been amazed by the response and have made so many friends as a result! That has been astounding and wonderful.

What do you think is the role of secrets in our lives?

I think there are a continuum of secrets, ranging from harmless to dangerous, and it can be so difficult to determine where on that continuum someone else’s secret is. There are the obvious ones: physical abuse. Date rape. Life-threatening habits. But what about the subtle ones? Like emotional abuse? If a friend told me a secret, I would do my best to help my friend make healthy decisions and to stick by them as they dealt with the consequences. If a friend is sharing a secret with you, they may be asking for help. Trust your instincts.

How do you prepare for Christmas?

I’m a DIY girl like Miranda’s sister Xanda, so Christmas is all about making stuff—peppermint ice cream (my own secret recipe here: http://www.hollycupala.com/2009/12/homemade-peppermint-ice-cream.html), scarves, Christmas cards, collage art. Our house becomes a flurry of art and baking supplies all month.

As an author/writer, are you doing something special this Christmas?

Having a party! That, and making lots of Tell Me a Secret-related presents for the very kind people who have helped me along the way. In fact, I’m giving away a magnet set and a print of a secret-inspired collage I did on my website, www.hollycupala.com. I hope you’ll stop by!

Does your family have a Christmas tradition?

Lots of them—but maybe one of my favorites is making gifts and cards for friends. Also, the holidays are an excellent excuse to hone my candy-making skills…this year it’s soft caramels, almond rocha, and peppermint bark (so far).

Do you take advantage of the Christmas vacation and write?

I’m working on the copyedits for the second novel (Don’t Breathe a Word, coming in Fall 2011!) and just beginning to put down ideas for a third novel. But for the most part, it’s all crafts and outings and crayons with my little one home from school for the holidays. January is for working!

As a writer, do you think it would be better to gift books for Christmas? why? Have you ever done this before?

Every single year—I have four nieces and nephews, so whenever I go to an author event or a conference, I pick up signed books to give them. They have a seriously excellent collection! Everything from Jane Yolen to Meg Cabot to Brian Selznick to John Green. I also love to pass on my favorite books to people who I think will love them.

If you were to gift one book to any person, what book would it be?

I wish I could give a copy of Tell Me a Secret to everyone who wanted one! But we’re doing the next best thing: we produced an audiobook, read by the amazing, award-winning actress Jenna Lamia, and are releasing it as a free(!) serialized podcast at www.tellmeasecretnovel.com! So far we’ve released over half and will have the special edition full version available soon.

Christmas Countdown: Day 2: Interview w/ Adele Griffin + Giveaway!

Today is the first stop in my blog, and also the second day of our Christmas Countdown!

We have the lovely Adele Griffin in our blog today, and I am lucky enough to ask her a few questions about what she does when she's not writing, and how she prepares for Christmas. And oh, we present to you, the Gingerbread House that Adele made!

Adele Griffin has penned quite a few novels, most of which are widely known and in the Young Adult genre, like The Julian Game, Vampire Island and Picture the Dead, which was released May 1st of this year.

Adele's new book, Tighter, will be released May 1st 2011.

--------

How do you prepare for Christmas?
It's different now that I'm the Mom of a three-year-old girl. So Christmas used to be grown-up with a fancy dinner and wine glasses -- and now it's all about corny Jingle Bell Rock songs and "Where does Frosty live in the summer?" and "Can Elmo help Santa with the toys?" A lot more squealing, but no more fancy.

As an author/writer, are you doing something special this Christmas?
My brother Robert is getting married, and my new sister-in-law Christine is planning this extremely fun-for-everyone, beautiful holiday wedding down in Atlanta where they live. My daughter gets to be a "snowflake girl." It's going to be very winter wonderland, but southern style. We are all jumping up and down in giddy excitement. But I have no author duties-- I don't even have to make a toast.

Do you have a tradition you celebrate which you think is special or unique in your family or place?
My dad was in the Army so we moved a lot when I was little, often into pre-furnished "quarters" so we never had a sense of "this is our home, that's our holiday wreath and ornaments and yadda yadda" and the anti-tradition has continued. As a family, we always mix it up-- we might have Christmas at this house or that one, or invite those friends or be guests-- doesn't matter .... We're a movable feast of multiple parts.

It's a joint blog event that will be hosted by Fragments of Life and Amaterasu Reads which will happen from December 13 to 24, 2010. Each day, we'll be featuring a book by posting a review and/or interview and a giveaway.
