[The Teen Book Scene Blog Tour] Review: Shades of Atlantis by Carol Oates

If you read a book with a title like Shades of Atlantis, wouldn't you be intrigued?
Atlantis. The lost city. I've always been a history buff and occasionally it gets mentioned, so when I heard about this book, I pounced on it like a tiger and devoured it in one sitting!

Summary:

Since the death of their parents, Triona Pryor and her brother, Ben, have lived with their aunt and uncle in Camden, Maine. Now in her senior year of high school, Triona loves her family and friends, but she has always felt that she didn't quite fit in...in Camden, or anywhere else.

Enter Caleb Wallace, the devilishly handsome man who has recently moved to Triona's small town. While their attraction to each other is instantaneous, it also proves to be dangerous...and deadly.

When tragedy strikes, Triona flees to London for solace and to start her life anew. It's there she discovers from an unlikely source that her family has been keeping secrets from her - secrets about not only her birthright, but her ultimate destiny as well. Armed with this knowledge, Triona finds herself thrown into a whole new world and into a battle to save the lives of everyone she loves.

I loved the romance in this book, which is overflowing to say the least. I was addicted to it. The intensity of the spontaneous attraction between Caleb and Triona was mind blowing even at the start. No reason at all, they just belonged to each other. They just fell in love at first sight, as simple as that. But what I do love about the romantic angle is the fact that IT WAS love at first sight. Who cares? They were meant for each other. That's all that matters. And though I do think it happens, it's very rare.

Cheesy at times, but very sexy, intense and invokes emotion upon the readers, I do love how Carol Oates shaped Caleb and Triona's characters. They weren't just two love sick people. Triona can be really stubborn and Caleb is this gentleman who would do anything for the girl he loves, even giving up his life for her. He sounds so noble. I like the fact that even though they seem so perfect on the outside, Triona, Caleb and the rest of the characters in this story isn't perfect. They have fears, anxieties and shortcomings, they make mistakes. Perfectly flawed characters, I like it.

I've always been curious about what happened to the mythical city of Atlantis and its people, if they really did exist at one point in time, or really just a myth, and Carol Oates created an impressive and very believable tale about this legend, combining it with elements from Celtic legends, even the story of King Arthur, and spinning a wonderful story that is such a delight to read!

Action packed, and thrilling, Shades of Atlantis is a fresh tale about a lost city, its people and the magical tale that behind it.

Will it be okay if I ask for more? I really do hope there is a sequel!

  2. Thank you for the review and for hosting me on the tour. I'm happy you enjoyed reading and love your take on the flawed characters since it's normally flaws I find most interesting in characters and real life.

Since it was the title that caught your attention I can tell you it has two meaning, one of which is explained in the sequel I am slowly piecing together. The other is this:

Shades is an ancient term for ghosts, using it that way the title means 'Ghosts of Atlantis' and refers to the lives of all the characters being shaped by a history that happened thousands of years before.

  3. I didn't realize the King Arthur legend was tied in to this story! It seems like it has a lot of layers, and I'm excited to read it!

    Great review!
