Today I have one awesome (I mean it! He's all sorts of awesome~) debut author T.M. Goeglein, who saved Tin and I from a life of crime, the details of which I can't disclose because of the highly sensitive information involved. We're kidding about the highly sensitive information part, but Theodore really is awesome. And we were able to get a hold of him to bring you this very informative interview. Enjoy!
Describe Cold Fury in one sentence.
After her parents and younger brother mysteriously disappear, leaving behind a scene of violence and destruction, sixteen-year-old Sara Jane Rispoli uses a tattered old notebook full of secrets to discover that her family belongs to the Chicago criminal organization, the Outfit, and that only she has the inherent power to save them.
Are you secretly a member of a mob? Why choose it as a theme for your book?
I can't claim a direct connection to the Outfit, but then again, this is Chicago, where everyone knows someone who knows a guy who...anyway, you get the picture.
Did you ever base any of your characters on real person(s)?
Sara Jane is a composite of several real people. Rather than base her on one person, I selected traits I admire in many of my friends and family members, especially tenacity. Sara Jane is the most determined person I know, which is absolutely necessary in any survival situation. Also, she has a self deprecating sense of humor...without that particular characteristic, a person is doomed to a life of taking themselves seriously. Ugh.
What is the best thing that a reviewer (or someone) said about your novel?
I'm paraphrasing, but a well-regarded YA author recently said that it's a good sign when she's reading a book and already thinking of who to recommend it to--and already has a long list for Cold Fury.
Can you give us one line from your novel that you find important, striking or unforgettable?
Actually, three short lines that build on one another: "As long as I keep moving, I should be OK. As long as I keep the notebook with me, I should stay alive. This is not what I thought life would be like when I turned sweet sixteen."
-----
So how are you guys doing so far? It wasn't a one-liner but that was indeed unforgettable!

Add Cold Fury to your Goodreads list
Sara Jane Rispoli is just a normal sixteen-year-old girl coping with school and a developing crush— until her parents and younger brother are kidnapped, and she discovers her family has been a key figure of Chicago’s Outfit (aka the mob) for decades. Her father, grandfather and great grandfather all used their special ability, cold fury, to settle disputes between the two mob factions—the muscle and the money. And unless Sara wants the mob to think her now missing family has turned state’s evidence, she will have to fill her father’s shoes as the mob’s peacemaker, using her own cold fury.
Cold Fury will be released by Putnam Juvenile on July 24, 2012

Teleportation? That or invisibility. If I had the latter ability I wouldn't need to get caught, now would I? WOULD I?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteHaha. Anyway, it depends on whom I would be saving. If a loved one, of course. Unless if I can think of a way to bend the rules and save both our hides.
I'd like to be able to manipulate time. Yes, I would risk using it to save those I love.

I've always wanted to fly, wings or not, so that would be my ability. As for saving any loved one, i would do that. Of course later i can fly away when someone wants to catch me, to hurt or experiment (like that guy with wings in X-Men 3)
ReplyDeleteNow i'm curious, what would be your ability Kai?
Email: priya.1dt@gmail.com
I'd like to be able to charm my way out of (or into) any situation. I would try to only use my power for good, but I can't make any promises.
ReplyDeleteI think mind-reading would be a cool ability to have. And yes, I would risk it and my sanity to save those I love.

Oh man, there are too many cool special abilities to choose from. Hmm...I suppose (given the fact that I'm a nurse), I'd like the ability to heal others with my touch or at the very least to alleviate their pain. But possessing telekinesis would be pretty damn awesome as well. And yeah, I would take the risk, especially if it meant helping someone I care about.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway!

Hmm... A secret ability of mine would probably be to talk to animals and I would absolutely use it to save anyone I loved, even if it put me in danger.

I'd love to have the ability to freeze time around me or turn back time so I could get all my reading caught up. Certainly, I use it to save my family, who wouldn't!

Either teleportation or flying. I'd love to be able to go to England whenever I wanted :D
ReplyDeleteForgot to comment! Sorry!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I would have the power to read minds, and yes, I would risk being discovered. I hate to be the one to cause someone to lose their life.
I'm not really sure what my special power would be... I would like to live longer than I do but then again I would like to be super super super smart!! Like reading fast!!! I think I would share it but if it could save someone's life I would risk my own life.
ReplyDeleteMy special ability would be the power to control water! I can make ice sculpture from water, and turn it to liquid in a second. How cool it would be, I'd be like some kind of an avatar LOL. :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to be able to have transportation as my special ability. Ever since I read the book Jumper I thought it would be a very useful ability. I would naturally use it to save people in trouble. I might teleport into a bank vault too tho. :)
ReplyDeleteI wish I could teleport (or some sort of instant travel ability). So much time is eaten up by just trying to get to places. Plus, like Dobby, you could save people from harm. Just look out for those knives. :(
ReplyDeleteI would love the ability to control time. There would be nothing better than to be able to stop it for a few hours so I can take a nap while no one knows.
ReplyDeleteAs for the dying question. Yes, If I loved someone enough I wouldn't hesitate.
I'd like to be able to teleport. Yes I would risk it.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be able to heal; of course I'd risk :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the GA ^^

I've always dreamed of being able to fly since I was younger. I'd definitely risk it to save a loved one, the alternative of me knowing I could've helped and didn't would be far worse!

ReplyDeleteI wish I could heal wounds or the likes, and yes I would use it to save anyone. I just think that if i was given the ability there's a reason behind it and that is to help when needed.
immortality.id save loved ones and more...
ReplyDeleteI want the special ability to fly. All of us want to travel and see the beautiful Mother Earth. I'll use it secretly and wear costume to save people from any danger and also do what i can to save Earth.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I want to put time travel down, I don't think it'd be that great of an ability (I'd probably screw it up too :P) I think I'd go with mind reading, it'd be interesting to see what people think!
ReplyDeleteAnd family, of course, I can't life without my mother's cookies after all :D

ReplyDeleteI'd use it to save my loved ones, even risking my life if I have to. Why to have power if I'm too scared to use it?
Ability to create fire! Ever since I was a little girl I've always been fascinated with fire, so if I could conduct fire on my own then yes I will use it to save the people who are important to me despite the danger, or death that I might face.
