Waiting on Wednesday (104): Surfacing & Gated

And we are back with a new Waiting on Wednesday post! We have two titles we're currently eying. Check them out below and tell us what you think! Are you excited for them too?

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine

Title: Surfacing by Nora Raleigh Baskin

Summary (from Goodreads):

A lyrical and deeply moving portrait of grief, blame, and forgiveness, and of finding the courage to confront your ghosts — one truth at a time.

As soon as she was under, Maggie heard the quiet, though every sound was amplified in her ears and in her brain...Sound, like shame, travels four times faster under the water.

Though only a sophomore, Maggie Paris is a star on the varsity swim team, but she also has an uncanny, almost magical ability to draw out people’s deepest truths, even when they don’t intend to share them. It’s reached a point where most of her classmates, all but her steadfast best friend, now avoid her, and she’s taken to giving herself away every chance she gets to an unavailable — and ungrateful — popular boy from the wrestling team, just to prove she still exists. Even Maggie’s parents, who are busy avoiding each other and the secret deep at the heart of their devastated family, seem wary of her. Is there such a thing as too much truth?

Why we're waiting for Surfacing:

I've been wanting to read a Nora Raleigh Baskin book in ages, but I just can't seem to get the chance to, and now here's a new one from her? I just love, love, love the cover. And I like the fact that despite saying that the protagonist, Maggie, has this magical ability to draw out the truth from people, it still sounds like a good YA contemporary read. I wonder how it'll work out though? I was sold by the time I read the last line.

Title: Gated by Amy Christine Parker
Release Date: August 27th 2013
Published by: Random House Childrens

Summary (from Goodreads):

Do the gates keep the unchosen out or the chosen in?

In Mandrodage Meadows, life seems perfect. The members of this isolated suburban community have thrived under Pioneer, the charismatic leader who saved them from their sad, damaged lives. Lyla Hamilton and her parents are original members of the flock. They moved here following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, looking to escape the evil in the world. Now seventeen, Lyla knows certain facts are not to be questioned:

Pioneer is her leader.

Will is her Intended.

The end of the world is near.

Like Noah before him, Pioneer has been told of the imminent destruction of humanity. He says his chosen must arm themselves to fight off the unchosen people, who will surely seek refuge in the compound's underground fortress--the Silo.

Lyla loves her family and friends, but given the choice, she prefers painting to target practice. And lately she'd rather think about a certain boy outside the compound than plan for married life in the Silo with Will. But with the end of days drawing near, she will have to pick up a gun, take a side, and let everyone know where she stands.

Why we're waiting for Gated:

I LOVE THIS! That summary is really something. It reminds me of Mystic City and a couple of other books dealing with isolated communities struggling to keep everything out. And adding some romance to it? Yes! I'm curious to know more about this "Pioneer". I know the summary sounds a little cliche, but I have high hopes for this. It's really interesting!

  4. I love the sound of Gated. I only heard about it recently and now its one I have my sights set on. Surfacing sounds neat but also that it might be more contemporary than otherworldly and that might be a turn off for me.
