Summary (from Goodreads):

Life was different in the Before: before vampires began devouring humans in a swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined. These days, we know what those quarantines are—holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the undead monsters, known as Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other…

And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible.

Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices—like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help…

Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world. But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race...

Why I'm waiting for The Farm:

This reminds me vaguely of Ethan Hawke's Daybreakers, where the vampires 'farm' humans for their steady supply of blood. This kind of premise always gives me the chills. It somehow reminds me a little bit of Darkness Before Dawn, another story about vampires which I seriously loved. I got a serious case of goosebumps while I was reading the summary for The Farm. I always like when I get this sinister feeling whenever I encounter a vampire book, I miss that feeling. And it looks like The Farm is putting a different, more mysterious, frightening spin to these fanged creatures. I can't wait!

If you're curious to know more about The Farm, you should check out Penguin Teen Australia's blog as they posted an extract of The Farm. The Australia cover looks a little bit different as well. Thoughts? What do you think?

  9. Consider my interest piqued! Which is kind of a big deal because I'm not too keen on vampires. They never sent chills down my spine, but The Farm sounds downright creepy.
