Waiting on Wednesday (92) Sanctum + The Dark Unwinding

So to all those who are still in BEA... have fun! Care to give me some books? :)

Here are our picks for this week!

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine

Coincidentally, the choices fits with the theme for Dystopian Domination 3, which my good friend Precious will kick off in a few days. Sadly, I won't be participating. But I will be launching a new feature next month, so watch out for that!

Title: Sanctum (Guards of the Shadowlands, #1) by Sarah Fine

Summary (from Goodreads):

A week ago, seventeen-year-old Lela Santos's best friend, Nadia, killed herself. Today, thanks to a farewell ritual gone awry, Lela is standing in paradise, looking upon a vast gated city in the distance – hell. No one willingly walks through the Suicide Gates, into a place smothered in darkness and infested with depraved creatures. But Lela isn't just anyone – she's determined to save her best friend's soul, even if it means sacrificing her eternal afterlife.

As Lela struggles to find Nadia, she's captured by the Guards, enormous, not-quite-human creatures that patrol the dark city's endless streets. Their all-too-human leader, Malachi, is unlike them in every way except one: his deadly efficiency. When he meets Lela, Malachi forms his own plan: get her out of the city, even if it means she must leave Nadia behind. Malachi knows something Lela doesn't – the dark city isn't the worst place Lela could end up, and he will stop at nothing to keep her from that fate.

Why I'm waiting for Sanctum:

The moment I finished reading the summary, I knew I needed to read this book. Like now. Something about Malachi's description just made me go 'awww'. Plus this kind of sounds not YA at all, but it is! Also, is Lela a good friend or what? There's something about reading books about guys who are damaged but someone who you just want to hug. I am basing all of my ramblings reasons from Brigid Kemmerer's review and I seriously want to read this book now!

Title: The Dark Unwinding by Sharon Cameron
Release Date: September 1st 2012

Summary (from Goodreads):

A spine-tingling tale of steampunk and spies, intrigue and heart-racing romance!

When Katharine Tulman's inheritance is called into question by the rumor that her eccentric uncle is squandering away the family fortune, she is sent to his estate to have him committed to an asylum. But instead of a lunatic, Katharine discovers a genius inventor with his own set of rules, who employs a village of nine hundred people rescued from the workhouses of London.

Katharine is now torn between protecting her own inheritance and preserving the peculiar community she grows to care for deeply. And her choices are made even more complicated by a handsome apprentice, a secretive student, and fears for her own sanity.

As the mysteries of the estate begin to unravel, it is clear that not only is her uncle's world at stake, but also the state of England as Katharine knows it. With twists and turns at every corner, this heart-racing adventure will captivate readers with its intrigue, thrills, and romance.

Why I'm waiting for The Dark Unwinding:

It's been a while since I've read any good YA steampunk books and this one sounds the perfect book to get me back to reading more! Aside from the fabulous cover, this book somehow reminds me of The Girl in the Steel Corset. I'm not sure why. It doesn't sound much of a steampunk but it's a bit YA contemp-ish as well. And there are spies! Steampunk and spies... what more can you ask for?

  6. I've seen Sanctum around but never took the time to read the summary - it sounds thrilling and interesting! Definitely unlike any other book at the moment. I'm going to have to check that out when I can. And even though I've not read any steampunk yet (want to! just haven't gotten around to it), The Dark Unwinding sounds pretty good. Thanks for spotlighting!
