Waiting on Wednesday (30)

Lovely readers, hello! *waves* I'm in a reading frenzy this week. I finished reading two books yesterday and wrote both reviews the same day as well. Am I in a roll or what? Now I'm reading Wither!

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine

Title: Cross My Heart by Sasha Gould
Release Date: June 9th 2011
Published by: Puffin
Summary (from Penguin's website):

Laura della Scala knows nothing beyond the convent walls which have trapped and bound her since she was twelve years old.

A single night will change her life.

She will soon learn the difference between an arranged marriage and true, reckless love.

Venice is a dangerous city. Intrigue, romance and power lie at its heart and secrets run through the blood of its rulers.

They call Laura 'La Muta'. The Silent One. She is about to break her silence . . . but at what cost?

Title: Shadows on the Moon by Zoƫ Marriott
Release Date: July 2011
Published by: Walker Books
Summary (from Goodreads):

"On my fourteenth birthday when the sakura was in full bloom, the men came to kill us. We saw them come, Aimi and me. We were excited, because we did not know how to be frightened. We had never seen soldiers before."

Suzume is a shadow-weaver. She can create mantles of darkness and light, walk unseen in the middle of the day, change her face. She can be anyone she wants to be. Except herself.

Suzume died officially the day the Prince's men accused her father of treason. Now even she is no longer sure of her true identity.

Is she the girl of noble birth living under the tyranny of her mother’s new husband, Lord Terayama? A lowly drudge scraping a living in the ashes of Terayama’s kitchens? Or Yue, the most beautiful courtesan in the Moonlit Lands?

Everyone knows Yue is destined to capture the heart of a prince. Only she knows that she is determined to use his power to destroy Terayama.

And nothing will stop her. Not even love.

Title: Scored by Lauren McLaughlin
Release Date: October 25th 2011
Published by: Random House Books for Young Readers
Summary (from Goodreads):

Set in the future when teenagers are monitored via camera and their recorded actions and confessions plugged into a computer program that determines their ability to succeed. All kids given a "score" that determines their future potential. This score has the ability to get kids into colleges, grant scholarships, or destroy all hope for the above. Scored's reluctant heroine is Imani, a girl whose high score is brought down when her best friend's score plummets. Where do you draw the line between doing what feels morally right and what can mean your future? Friendship, romance, loyalty, family, human connection and human value: all are questioned in this fresh and compelling dystopian novel set in the scarily foreseeable future.

Why I'm waiting for Cross my Heart:

Aside from that very colorful cover? It's set in the wonderful city of Venice. A single night that changed Laura's life. I wonder what happened to her? The summary creates just the right amount of suspense and intrigue and I can't help but think of what the book is really about.

Why I'm waiting for Shadows on the Moon:

I really really want to read books set in Asia or with Asian characters. I love the myth and the legends that surrounds this part of the world as well, so I've been trying to get my hands on Cindy Pon's books, and Shadows on the Moon just joined that list! The Japanese sounding names, and the summary, combined with my little knowledge of Asia made me feel excited for this book. A girl who can be anyone except herself? Suzume just made me fall in love with her character description.

Why I'm waiting for Scored:

Because its a dystopian novel! Dystopian books just have a special place in my heart (and my bookshelf). The summary calls to mind Delirium, Matched and Awaken, taking elements from these novels and creating another book that will surely catch the attention of a lot of readers.

What are your WoWs this week? Please share your links when you comment! I would love to see what books you're waiting for!

  3. Haha great minds think alike with Scored :D Love the other two! I haven't heard of either of them but I'm definitely intrigued now. And hello Venice.... I love Italy! YA books set in other countries really appeal to me, so I can't wait to read these both!

  4. I am quite interested in Scored, in some ways I am not so sure the scoring aspect might be too bad, but it sounds like anything else in our world it is corrupt. Great pick!

  5. Shadows on the Moon sounds like an interesting read. I like the idea of shadow-weavers. Scored vaguely reminds me of the Hunger Games, so I'm pretty sure I would love reading it. Excellent picks!
