Review: Rhymes With Cupid by Anna Humprey

Because Valentines day is just around the corner, this is a very timely read. Like Elyse, its one of the days in the year that I'm dreading.

Summary:

Rhymes with Cupid is about a girl named Elyse who, after a terrible heartbreak last Valentine’s day, has sworn off dating as well as celebrating the February 14th holiday. Both things are a bit of a problem, though, since a) she works at a gift & stationery store, surrounded by tacky, sparkly cards and annoying singing Cupid dolls and b) she ends up meeting this guy named Patrick who works in the same mall and is her new neighbour and her driving instructor and is really cute and incredibly charming… which, you know, might be okay except for the whole ‘sworn off dating’ thing and the fact that he seems to be into her best friend.
Jaded and cynical when it comes to love, Elyse has had enough about love and relationships. Why? She had the perfect example going on in her life. Her father left her and her mom for another woman, and her boyfriend left her for her best friend. And Valentines is fast approaching, and she's getting sick of all the cheesiness she sees, working in a gift store. A cute guy comes, who she thinks is perfect for her friend, happens to be her neighbor, who also became her driving instructor. Oh, and he also has a crush on her. But once Patrick gets over his crush on Elyse and starts pining for her friend, Dina, Elyse started "feeling" again. Which is bad, very bad.

Rhymes with Cupid is another fun, light and fluffy read. It's cute in a lot of ways. I haven't read about a guy in a contemp novel that made me smile in a long while like Patrick did. He's good looking, goofy, funny and very kind, qualities he has that just annoys the life out of Elyse.

Elyse is a very big skeptic. You can't blame her for seeing the negative side when it comes to love, she's dense and she's just generally stubborn, refusing Patrick's feelings, his help and all the things he had done for her. Despite being the Ice Queen, she still fell and it scared her a lot. Elyse had her boyfriend cheat on her with her bestfriend, and she thought by falling in love with Patrick, she'll be the one doing the cheating with her bestfriend this time.

When you say Cupid, of course, it's about love. And this book had written about the different kinds of love. We have Elyse who refuses to fall again but the one boy who can make her comes, and all hell broke loose. Dina, the hopeless romantic, blinded by love and refuses to give up on someone who's moved on without her. Elyse's mom, who has surprisingly found love in the most unlikely of places and time, and Patrick's grandfather, who's constantly loving his wife even after she had long passed away.

It's heart warming and touching to read about all of these things, set as a backdrop of Elyse and Patrick's love story.

Rhymes with Cupid is a romantic comedy filled with lessons about love we can all relate to. I especially love the ending! The simplicity of Anna Humprey's writing will make the readers love this book about love, friendship, and, well, the dreaded Valentines Day. As Elyse would say, sometimes you just have to find that elusive 2% of men who won't break your heart. And don't let him go once you find him. :)
